Get Started with the AJAX Control Toolkit

Learn all you need to know to get started using the AJAX Control Toolkit.
The AJAX Control Toolkit contains more than 30 free controls that you can use in your ASP.NET applications. In this tutorial, you learn how to download the AJAX Control Toolkit and add the toolkit controls to your Visual Studio/Visual Web Developer Express toolbox.

Downloading the AJAX Control Toolkit

The AJAX Control Toolkit is an open source project developed by the members of the ASP.NET community and the ASP.NET team. The AJAX Control Toolkit is hosted at CodePlex.com which is the Microsoft website for hosting open source projects.
Navigate to the following URL to go directly to the AJAX Control Toolkit CodePlex page:

Click the Downloads link (see Figure 1) to see a list of different versions of the AJAX Control Toolkit. For example, you can download the version of the toolkit that contains the AJAX Control Toolkit controls. Alternatively, you can download the full version of the Toolkit that contains the controls, a sample site, and the source code for the controls.

After you download the file, you need to unblock the file. Right-click the file, select Properties, and click the Unblock button (see Figure 2).

After you unblock the file, you can unzip the file: Right-click the file and select the Extract All menu option. Now, we are ready to add the toolkit to the Visual Studio/Visual Web Developer toolbox.

Adding the AJAX Control Toolkit to the Toolbox

The easiest way to use the AJAX Control Toolkit is to add the toolkit to your Visual Studio/Visual Web Developer toolbox (see Figure 3). That way, you can simply drag a toolkit control onto a page when you want to use it.

First, you need to add an AJAX Control Toolkit tab to the toolbox. Follow these steps.
  1. Create a new ASP.NET Website by selecting the menu option File, New Website. Double-click the Default.aspx in the Solution Explorer window to open the file in the editor.
  2. Right-click the Toolbox beneath the General Tab and select the menu option Add Tab (see Figure 4).
  3. Enter a new tab named AJAX Control Toolkit.

Next, you need to add the AJAX Control Toolkit controls to the new tab. Follow these steps:
  • Right-click beneath the AJAX Control Toolkit tab and select the menu option Choose Items (see Figure 5).
  • Browse to the location where you unzipped the AJAX Control Toolkit and select the AjaxControlToolkit.dll assembly.

After you complete these steps, all of the toolkit controls will appear in your toolbox.

Upgrading to a New Version of the Toolkit

If you were using an older release of the Toolkit and now need to move to a later version here are the recommended steps:
  • Binaries - Delete the old version of the AjaxControlToolkit.dll assembly from your website Bin folder.
  • Toolbox Items - Delete the AJAX Control Toolkit tab and follow the steps above to re-create the tab with the new version of the AjaxControlToolkit.dll assembly.

AlwaysVisibleControl Description 
 
The AlwaysVisibleControl is a simple extender allowing you to pin controls to the page so that they appear to float over the background body content when it is scrolled or resized. It targets any ASP.NET control and always keeps the position a specified distance from the desired horizontal and vertical sides.

To avoid having the control flash and move when the page loads, it is recommended that you
absolutely position the control in the desired location in addition to attaching the extender.

  • TargetControlID - ID of control for this extender to always make visible
  • HorizontalOffset - Distance to the HorizontalSide edge of the browser in pixels from the same side of the target control. The default is 0 pixels.
  • HorizontalSide - Horizontal edge of the browser (either Left, Center, or Right) used to anchor the target control. The default is Left.
  • VerticalOffset - Distance to the VerticalSide edge of the browser in pixels from the same side of the target control. The default is 0 pixels.
  • VerticalSide - Vertical edge of the browser (either Top, Middle, or Bottom) used to anchor the target control. The default is Top.
  • ScrollEffectDuration - Length in seconds of the scrolling effect to last when the target control is repositioned. The default is .1 second.
  • UseAnimation - Whether or not to animate the element into position. The default is false.

Parallel Animation
The ParallelAnimation plays several animations simultaneously. It inherits from ParentAnimation, but makes itself the owner of all its child animations as this allows it to use a single timer and synchronization mechanisms of the parent animation (in other words, the duration properties of any child animations are ignored in favor of the parent's duration). It is very useful in creating sophisticated effects through combinations of simpler animations.
Note: The ParallelAnimation cannot have any child animations that derive from SequenceAnimation.

Sequence Animation
The SequenceAnimation runs several child animations one after the other. It can also repeat the sequence of animations for a specified number of iterations (which defaults to a single iteration, but will repeat forever if you specify zero or less iterations). It is important to note that the SequenceAnimation ignores its duration and fps properties, and will let each of its child animations use any values they please.
Note: The SequenceAnimation cannot be a child animation of
ParallelAnimation, SelectionAnimation, or any animation deriving from these two.

Condition Animation
The ConditionAnimation is used as a control structure to play a specific child animation depending on the result of executing the conditionScript. If the conditionScript evaluated to true, the first child animation is played. If it evaluates to false, the second child animation is played (although nothing is played if the second animation is not present).

SequenceAnimation.

Case Animation
The CaseAnimation is used as a control structure to play a specific child animation depending on the result of executing the selectScript, which should evaluate to the index of the child animation to play (this is similar to the switch statement in C#, etc.). If the provided index is outside the bounds of the child animations (or if nothing was returned) then we will not play anything.
Note: The CaseAnimation cannot have any child animations that derive from
SequenceAnimation.

The FadeAnimation is used to fade an element in or out of view, depending on the provided Sys.Extended.UI.Animation.FadeEffect. The minimum and maximum opacity values can be specified to precisely control the fade. Also, due to known issues with Internet Explorer, the forceLayoutInIE property is used to enforce certain conditions (specifically that it has a set size and background color). You may also consider using FadeInAnimation and FadeOutAnimation if you know the specific direction you are fading.
